Munich

Our first day in Munich, Jenny came down with a migraine. This photo was taken shortly before she was forced to contend with jackhammers, sirens, sunshine and a variety of odors on the way back to the hotel. We bought some German migraine medicine and that knocked it out, but in the meantime, Oliver and I went to the English Gardens.


The Englischer Garten is a huge park with miles of paved trails, streams and lawns where you can see pervy old men sunbathing, and proudly displaying themselves, in the nude.


Then you come to the Chinese Tower, which is at center of a beer garden.

Fortunately for us, tiny rocks are used as a ground cover in beer gardens. Not so great for crappy American strollers (and, by the way, neither are cobblestones), but they kept Oliver entertained. The Germans looked at us with disdain and he ended up covered in gray dust, but it was worth it.

Of course, this was before we discovered the playground.


Aside from the rides to and from the airport, this was the one and only time we took the metro (the U-Bahn). We decided we'd rather walk than pay $5 each for a one-way ticket. This worked out well given the vast amounts of cheese, bread, beer and in my case weird meats, that we consumed.




This was taken in the open air market (the viktualienmarkt). Beer everywhere! That said, we were not impressed with German beer. They're really into hefeweizen and pilsner. Their stouts are way too sweet and they don't have IPA (this was the only thing we missed about US). I think the lack of variety is due to the strict standards for beer making in Germany.
